When we were engaged to redesign a new home for a young couple, the existing single fronted workers cottage was on its last leg of life. The clients wanted to retain the external single cottage look, but with a modern form to the upper storey (due to site constraints and numerous neighbours on their side boundary) with a bright warm living room overlooking the small backyard. The result is a fairy tale castle with sustainability at its core.
Going for a custom design home allows a bespoke outcome, such as a side entrance to a bike garage with car charging capability, and an enviable laundry come bathroom that disappears behind the kitchen and has its own access to the outside. A stairwell that evokes the climb to Rapunzel's tower, with red brick wall and skylights punctuating the passage. On the upper level, there are 2 bedrooms with catheral ceilings and a bathroom. Downstairs, a clerestory window brings light to the belly of the house. Everywhere, there is light in this new home.
With only 6m of the land facing north on this narrow site, this home rated incredibly well at 7.4 star.
